IUGR

The journey of becoming a parent is filled with many wholesome moments and certain challenges as well. A key aspect of experiencing a successful pregnancy is ensuring the healthy growth of the baby in the womb. IUGR is a condition that indicates poor fetal growth. Let’s learn about this condition in detail.

What is IUGR

IUGR stands for intrauterine growth restriction, indicating that the growth rate of a fetus is less than what is considered healthy or normal, given the number of weeks of pregnancy. This simply means that the baby in the womb is not growing as it is expected. Primarily, this condition can either be moderate or severe, depending on the growth rate of the baby.

Broadly, IUGR can be categorised into three types: asymmetrical, symmetrical and mixed. All these types are based on different challenges in the baby’s growth.

Cause and Treatment for IUGR

  • There can be different causes for these conditions, including genetic factors, placental factors, fetal factors and maternal factors.
  • IUGR can be diagnosed easily through periodic ultrasounds before birth. In many cases, a diagnosis is made post-birth also.
  • The treatment of IUGR primarily includes treating the underlying conditions that trigger the poor growth of the baby.
