What is Cervical Incompetence

Cervical incompetence, also known as cervical insufficiency, is a condition where the cervix is unable to retain the fetus efficiently. Know that the cervix is responsible for holding the growing baby in place and an incompetency in the cervix can lead to preterm birth or miscarriage. This becomes a challenge for women in their second trimester or early third trimester when the cervix, usually painlessly, dilates and opens up. This condition is often diagnosed retrospectively in pregnant women.

  • Cervical incompetence can be due to different reasons like past miscarriage, cervical trauma, connective tissue disorders, congenital abnormalities etc.
  • A diagnosis usually includes a physical examination, a test of clinical history or ultrasonographic evaluation.
  • In most cases, treatment included performing a cervical cerclage, recommending progesterone supplements, and changes in lifestyle and physical activities.
